MOThS is a nocturnal group exhibition curated by Koi Persyn, presenting the artistic practices of Kim Farkas (1988, FR), Agata Ingarden (1994, PL), Minne Kersten (1993, NL), Vibeke Mascini (1989, NL), Mónica Mays (1990, ES), and Chantal van Rijt (1984, NL) in the Chapel of Boondael. The title of the exhibition draws on the French mots (words), and references The Death of the Moth, a title shared by two essays by Virginia Woolf (1942) and Annie Dillard (1976). While Woolf observes the moth from her writing room, caught in a fragile struggle between life and death at a windowsill, Dillard describes its fatal attraction to a candle, an encounter that ultimately ignites and consumes its delicate insect body. Together, the essays present the moth as a literary symbol for both quiet transience and ecstatic self-sacrifice. Woolf and Dillard offer subtle yet gripping portraits of resilience, transformation, and mortality that simultaneously mirror the(ir) human condition and artistic practices – reflections on mourning and desire at the onset of dusk or dawn.
MOThS does not merely illuminate the moth’s death, but rather its wondrous life cycle – from egg to caterpillar, cocoon to moth – within a mysterious transformation. Inside the cocoon, all cells of the caterpillar’s body dissolve into a formless mass, from which the body, limbs, and organs of the moth are newly constructed. Within this tension between destruction and becoming, the image of the moth also offers a key to an existential reading of the writings of Woolf and Dillard – who, throughout their work, repeatedly reveal both the spiritual gravity and mystical beauty of existence, as well as its irrevocable end. In the nocturnal exhibition, the artworks therefore trace and celebrate the different stages of the cycle amid this state of flux, proposing new arrangements of their cells. The chapel itself is approached as a giant cocoon, sheltering a moth in the process of becoming, before it unfurls its wings and takes flight.

MOThS est une exposition collective nocturne, sous le commissariat de Koi Persyn, qui présente les pratiques artistiques de Kim Farkas (1988, FR), Agata Ingarden (1994, PL), Minne Kersten (1993, NL), Vibeke Mascini (1989, NL), Mónica Mays (1990, ES) et Chantal van Rijt (1984, NL) dans la chapelle de Boondael. Le titre de l’exposition fait référence à ‘mots’, et renvoie à The Death of the Moth, titre partagé par deux essais de Virginia Woolf (1942) et Annie Dillard (1976). Tandis que Woolf observe le papillon de nuit depuis sa chambre d’écriture, pris dans une lutte fragile entre la vie et la mort sur le rebord d’une fenêtre, Dillard décrit son attraction fatale pour une bougie, une rencontre qui finit par enflammer et consumer son corps d’insecte délicat. Ensemble, ces essais présentent le papillon de nuit comme un symbole littéraire à la fois de la fugacité silencieuse et du sacrifice extatique. Woolf et Dillard offrent des portraits subtils mais saisissants de résilience, de transformation et de mortalité, qui reflètent à la fois la condition humaine et les pratiques artistiques – des méditations sur le deuil et le désir à l’orée du crépuscule ou de l’aube.
MOThS ne se contente pas d’éclairer la mort du papillon de nuit, mais s’attache plutôt à son cycle de vie merveilleux – de l’œuf à la chenille, du cocon au papillon – au sein d’une métamorphose mystérieuse. À l’intérieur du cocon, toutes les cellules du corps de la chenille se dissolvent en une masse informe, à partir de laquelle le corps, les membres et les organes du papillon sont nouvellement reconstruits. Dans cette tension entre destruction et devenir, l’image du papillon de nuit offre également une clé de lecture existentielle des écrits de Woolf et de Dillard, qui, tout au long de leur œuvre, révèlent à plusieurs reprises à la fois la gravité spirituelle et la beauté mystique de l’existence, ainsi que son terme irrévocable. Dans cette exposition nocturne, les œuvres retracent et célèbrent ainsi les différentes étapes de ce cycle au sein de cet état de flux, proposant de nouvelles configurations de leurs cellules. La chapelle elle-même est envisagée comme un cocon géant, abritant un papillon de nuit en devenir, avant qu’il ne déploie ses ailes et, finalement, ne prenne son envol.

MOThS is een nachtelijke groepstentoonstelling, gecureerd door Koi Persyn, die de artistieke praktijken van Kim Farkas (1988, FR), Agata Ingarden (1994, PL), Minne Kersten (1993, NL), Vibeke Mascini (1989, NL), Mónica Mays (1990, ES) en Chantal van Rijt (1984, NL) presenteert in de Kapel van Boondaal. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar het Franse mots (woorden), en naar The Death of the Moth, een titel gedeeld door twee essays van Virginia Woolf (1942) en Annie Dillard (1976). Terwijl Woolf de nachtvlinder observeert vanuit haar schrijfkamer, gevangen in een fragiele strijd tussen leven en dood op een vensterbank, beschrijft Dillard diens fatale aantrekkingskracht tot een kaars – een ontmoeting die uiteindelijk het kwetsbare insectenlichaam doet ontbranden en ontbinden. Samen presenteren deze essays de nachtvlinder als een literair symbool voor zowel stille vergankelijkheid als extatische zelfopoffering. Woolf en Dillard bieden subtiele maar indringende portretten van veerkracht, transformatie en sterfelijkheid, die zowel hun menselijke conditie als artistieke praktijken weerspiegelen – reflecties op rouw en verlangen bij schemering of dageraad.
MOThS belicht niet louter de dood van de nachtvlinder, maar richt zich eerder op diens wonderlijke levenscyclus – van ei tot rups, van cocon tot (nacht)vlinder – binnen een mysterieuze metamorfose. In de cocon lossen alle cellen van het lichaam van de rups op tot een vormloze massa, waaruit het lichaam, de ledematen en de organen van de nachtvlinder opnieuw worden opgebouwd. In deze spanning tussen destructie en wording biedt het beeld van de nachtvlinder tevens een sleutel tot een existentiële lezing van de geschriften van Woolf en Dillard, die in hun werk herhaaldelijk zowel de spirituele zwaarte als de mystieke schoonheid van het bestaan blootleggen, evenals het onherroepelijke einde ervan. In de nachtelijke tentoonstelling traceren en vieren de kunstwerken daarom de verschillende fasen van deze cyclus binnen een toestand van voortdurende flux, waarbij nieuwe ordeningen van hun cellen worden voorgesteld. De kapel zelf wordt benaderd als een reusachtige cocon, die een nachtvlinder in wording herbergt, voordat deze haar vleugels ontvouwt en uiteindelijk uitvliegt.
MOThS is een coproductie van Komplot, onderdeel van het OFF-programma van Art Brussels en wordt gerealiseerd met de steun van de gemeente Elsene, de Ambassade van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden en het Pools Instituut Brussel.
