Komplot (Brussels, Belgium) presents they built up the picture, Caroline Reveillaud’s first solo exhibition in Belgium, from January 16 to February 28, 2026.

Extending her reflections on images and their modes of appearance, Caroline Reveillaud has been conducting research since 2022 on the animal figure of the freshwater bivalve (river mussel) and its interactions with humans. In this work, she explores the notion of a “sensible image,” which, at the heart of a network of exchanges, connects natural, human, and social histories and highlights an ecology of our relationship with the living world.

The exhibition they built up the picture takes as its starting point her ongoing film Biomimético-imago. Within Komplot’s space, she unfolds a constellation of sculptural cabinets, drawings, texts, references, and a sound piece by Élodie Lecat, an ensemble that, when assembled, offers a fragmented version of the film, spanning from the research phase to its realization.

Drawing on the language of documentary and experimental cinema, Biomimético-imago. is built from scientific and philosophical sources. It first explores notions of the naturalist gaze, between museum, conservation, collection, specimen, and drawing; then the biological revolution and the emergence of new tools for understanding; and finally, the sensory and collective field experience, where observers, lookouts, and practices of participatory science open up new perspectives.

Biomimético-imago received research and production support from the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) and research grant support from ADAGP for the continuation of her research on naturalism. In co-production with Gilbard. Komplot is generously supported by the FWB, COCOF, VGC, and the municipality of Anderlecht.

At the opening, Élodie Lecat will perform a live set created for the exhibition they built up the picture. This original work emerges from a combination of diverse sound sources: recordings from the film shoots and Caroline Reveillaud’s sound library blend with Élodie’s own creations and the sounds she has collected over time. By merging these sonic materials, the piece offers an immersive experience where images and sounds interact and complement each other, enriching the concept of a sensible image that the artist unfolds at Komplot.

Élodie Lecat is a French artist. She divides her time between Paris and the Hautes-Alpes, where she organizes the Résidence Résidence residency each year. Alongside her artistic practice, Élodie Lecat devoted several years to the study of the Chinese language and completed a master’s degree in ancient Chinese literature at INALCO. She then turned to composing experimental sound pieces. In her musical performances, she blends recorded sources with sample loops created from a wide range of materials: analog synthesizers, voice, drum machines, and effects pedals. Anne-Lou Vicente describes her music as “an electronic reverie with troubled, strident, and airy accents, during which the environment, variously urban, aquatic, telluric, and eccentric, becomes one with you.”

Following the sound performance, chef Camille Van Meenen will offer a reimagined version of the classic mussels‑and‑fries dish.

ABOUT CAROLINE REVEILLAUD

Caroline Reveillaud’s work questions the ways we look at images, the relationships woven and entangled between them and our perceptions, and the existence of an observing subject shaped within a historical framework. Her practice focuses on images, their ways of being in the world and their processes of appearance, where the ontology and ontophany of images are at play. Reveillaud’s research develops from her lived experience: an introduction to art, both anecdotal and personal, through photographed works (circulated in magazines, popular books, or historical documents with analytical intent). This empirical, affect-laden learning of sculpture and painting through their reproduction, their photogenic quality, their mysterious and seductive virtuality, and their latent potential has left a lasting mark on her practice. Disturbed by these icons and by the perceptual effects partly generated through their technical mediations, she seeks to understand why they fascinate her so deeply. Gradually, she attempts to deconstruct the inherently conditioned gaze she casts upon them by developing her own evolving corpus (photographic and filmic), which she stores and continually reshuffles like a deck of cards.

Caroline Reveillaud graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2016. In 2018, she cofounded the artist-run space In.plano (Île Saint-Denis), where she worked until 2022, alternating between personal productions and collective engagement in the programming and organisation of exhibitions. After a year-long residency at Mains d’OEuvres, she joined the collective Ô Léonie in Paris in 2024. She has been represented by Galerie Florence Loewy (Paris) since May 2017. Her work has been shown in France at institutions such as Frac Grand Large, Villa du Parc, Collection Lambert in Avignon, Domaine de Kéravel, DOC!, Au Lieu, Delpire&co, Cité internationale des arts de Paris, Galerie E. Mouchet, Espace Topographie de l’Art, Musée National des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Espace Bubenberg, Galerie H. Lacharmoise, Le Moulin de la Croix in Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, Galerie Standard in Rennes, as well as abroad at Griffin Gallery in London, among others. Her work has received support from the CNAP in 2019 for the exhibition SUMMA IOS (with gallery support), from the Fondation des Artistes in 2021 for her project Sharp-eyed, and in 2022 for Biomimético Imago, which received CNAP’s research and production grant. In 2023, she took part in CNAP’s Programme Suite at La Friche, Réunion Island. She was awarded a research grant from ADAGP in 2024. In 2025, together with writer Laure Mathieu-Hanen, she received the Arcane grant for publishing from ADAGP for the creation of an artist’s book to be published in 2026.

Komplot (Bruxelles, Belgique) présente they built up the picture, la première exposition personnelle de Caroline Reveillaud en Belgique, du 16 janvier au 28 février 2026.

Prolongeant ses réflexions sur les images et leurs modes d’apparition, Caroline Reveillaud mène depuis 2022 une recherche sur la figure animale du bivalve d’eau douce (moule de rivière) et ses interactions avec l’humain. Elle y explore la notion d’« image sensible » qui, au coeur d’un faisceau d’échanges, relie l’histoire naturelle, humaine et sociale et éclaire une écologie de notre rapport au vivant.

L’exposition they built up the picture prend pour point de départ son film en cours, Biomimético-imago. Dans l’espace de Komplot, elle propose de déployer à travers des sculptures-cabinets, des dessins, textes, références, et une pièce sonore réalisée par Élodie Lecat, un ensemble qui, mis bout à bout, offre une version du film par fragments, depuis la phase de recherche jusqu’à sa réalisation.

Empruntant au langage du film documentaire et expérimental, Biomimético-imago, le film, se construit à partir de sources scientifiques et philosophiques. Il explore en premier les notions de regard naturaliste, entre musée, conservation, collection, spécimens et dessin ; ensuite la révolution biologique et l’émergence de nouveaux outils de compréhension ; puis, l’expérience sensible et collective du terrain, où observateur·ices, vigies et pratiques de science participative ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives.

Ce projet a reçu le soutien à la recherche et à la production du Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) et le soutien de l’ADAGP (dotation de recherche) pour la suite de sa recherche sur le naturalisme. L’exposition est réalisée en coproduction avec Gilbard. Komplot est généreusement soutenu par la FWB, la COCOF, VGC et la commune d’Anderlecht.

Lors du vernissage, Élodie Lecat jouera un live set créé pour l’exposition they built up the picture. Cette œuvre originale naît de la combinaison de diverses sources sonores : des enregistrements issus des tournages et de la bibliothèque sonore de Caroline Reveillaud se mêlent aux créations personnelles d’Élodie ainsi qu’aux sons qu’elle a collectés au fil du temps. En fusionnant ces matériaux sonores, la pièce offre une expérience immersive où images et sons interagissent et se complètent, enrichissant l’idée d’image sensible que l’artiste déploie à Komplot.

Élodie Lecat est une artiste française. Elle partage son temps entre Paris et les Hautes-Alpes où elle organise chaque année la résidence Résidence. Parallèlement à sa pratique artistique, Élodie Lecat a consacré plusieurs années à l’étude de la langue chinoise et a soutenu un master en littérature chinoise ancienne à l’Inalco. Elle entreprend ensuite la composition de pièces sonores expérimentales. Dans ses performances musicales, elle mêle des sources enregistrées, à des boucles de samples qu’elle réalise à partir de sources variées : synthé analogiques, voix, boite à rythme, pédales d’effets. Anne-Lou Vicente définit sa musique comme une « rêverie électronique aux accents troubles, stridents et aériens au cours de laquelle l’environnement – variablement urbain, aquatique, tellurique et excentrique- fait corps avec vous. ».

À l’issue de la performance sonore, la cheffe Camille Van Meenen proposera une version revisitée du plat “moules-frites”.

À PROPOS DE CAROLINE REVEILLAUD

 Le travail de Caroline Reveillaud pose la question des regards portés aux images, des relations nouées et intriquées entre elles et nos perceptions, de l’existence d’un sujet observateur constitué dans une trame historique. Son travail porte sur les images, leurs manières d’être au monde, et leurs processus d’apparition, ontologie et ontophanie des images sont à l’oeuvre. Les recherches de Caroline Reveillaud se développent à partir de son expérience vécue : une introduction à l’art, anecdotique et personnelle, via des oeuvres photographiées (diffusées dans des magazines, livres de vulgarisation ou documents historiques à visée analytique). Cet apprentissage empirique, emprunt d’affects, de la sculpture et de la peinture à travers leur reproduction, leur photogénie, leur virtualité mystérieuse séduisante et partielle, leurs potentialités contenues, marquent durablement sa pratique. Troublée par ces icônes, leurs effets perceptifs provoqués en partie par leurs médiations techniques, elle tente de comprendre pourquoi elles la fascinent tant et essaie de déconstruire petit à petit le regard intrinsèquement acquis qu’elle leur porte en développant son propre corpus évolutif (photographique et filmique) qu’elle stocke et vient re-battre continuellement comme un jeu de cartes.

Voortbouwend op haar reflecties over beelden en hun verschijningsvormen, doet Caroline Reveillaud sinds 2022 onderzoek naar de dierlijke figuur van het zoetwaterschelpje (riviermossel) en de interacties ervan met de mens. Ze onderzoekt hierin het begrip van het “gevoelige beeld”, dat, in het hart van een netwerk van uitwisselingen, natuurlijke, menselijke en sociale geschiedenissen met elkaar verbindt en een ecologie van onze relatie met het levende onthult.

De tentoonstelling they built up the picture vertrekt vanuit haar lopende film Biomimético-imago. In de ruimte van Komplot ontvouwt ze een constellatie van sculpturale kabinetten, tekeningen, teksten, referenties en een geluidswerk van Élodie Lecat. Dit geheel biedt, wanneer het wordt samengebracht, een gefragmenteerde versie van de film, van de onderzoeksfase tot de uiteindelijke realisatie.

Biomimético-imago put uit de taal van documentaire en experimentele cinema en is opgebouwd uit wetenschappelijke en filosofische bronnen. De film onderzoekt eerst het begrip van de naturalistische blik, tussen museum, conservatie, collectie, specimen en tekening; vervolgens de biologische revolutie en de opkomst van nieuwe instrumenten voor kennisverwerving; en ten slotte de zintuiglijke en collectieve veldervaring, waarin waarnemers, uitkijkposten en participatieve wetenschapspraktijken nieuwe perspectieven openen.

Dit project kreeg onderzoeks- en productieondersteuning van het Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) en onderzoeksbeurzen van ADAGP voor de voortzetting van haar onderzoek naar naturalisme. Tijdens de opening zal Élodie Lecat een live set uitvoeren, speciaal gecreëerd voor de tentoonstelling they built up the picture. Dit originele werk ontstaat uit de combinatie van diverse geluidsbronnen: opnames van de filmopnames en de geluidsbibliotheek van Caroline Reveillaud vermengen zich met Élodie’s eigen creaties en de geluiden die zij door de jaren heen heeft verzameld. Door deze geluidsmaterialen te combineren, biedt het stuk een meeslepende ervaring waarin beeld en geluid met elkaar interageren en elkaar aanvullen, en zo het idee van een gevoelige beeldvorming dat de kunstenaar bij Komplot ontvouwt, verrijkt.

Élodie Lecat is een Franse kunstenares. Ze verdeelt haar tijd tussen Parijs en de Hautes-Alpes, waar zij elk jaar de residentie Résidence Résidence organiseert. Parallel aan haar artistieke praktijk wijdde Élodie Lecat meerdere jaren aan de studie van de Chinese taal en behaalde zij een master in de oude Chinese literatuur aan het INALCO. Vervolgens begon zij met het componeren van experimentele geluidswerken. OVER CAROLINE REVEILLAUD

Het werk van Caroline Reveillaud onderzoekt de manieren waarop we naar beelden kijken, de relaties die tussen hen worden geweven en verstrengeld met onze percepties, en het bestaan van een observerend subject dat gevormd wordt binnen een historische context. Haar praktijk richt zich op beelden, hun manieren van bestaan in de wereld en hun processen van verschijnen, waarbij zowel de ontologie als de ontofanie van beelden een rol spelen. Het onderzoek van Reveillaud ontwikkelt zich vanuit haar eigen ervaringen: een introductie tot kunst, zowel anekdotisch als persoonlijk, via gefotografeerde werken (verspreid in tijdschriften, populaire boeken of historische documenten met analytische intentie). Deze empirische, affectieve manier van leren, door middel van sculptuur en schilderkunst via hun reproductie, hun fotogenieke kwaliteit, hun mysterieuze en verleidelijke virtualiteit en hun latente potentieel, heeft een blijvende invloed op haar praktijk gehad. Verontrust door deze iconen en door de perceptuele effecten die gedeeltelijk via hun technische bemiddeling worden gegenereerd, probeert ze te begrijpen waarom ze haar zo diep fascineren. Geleidelijk aan probeert ze de inherent geconditioneerde blik waarmee ze naar hen kijkt te deconstrueren door haar eigen evoluerende corpus (fotografisch en filmisch) te ontwikkelen, dat ze opslaat en voortdurend herschikt als een stapel kaarten.
